Professional In-Office Teeth Cleaning
Brushing and flossing your teeth every day is the best way to maintain your teeth. However, merely brushing and flossing every day will not prevent tooth decay or gum disease. Visiting your dentist’s office every six months for a dental exam and teeth cleaning is the only way to guarantee optimal oral health and overall well-being.
After teeth cleaning, your teeth will feel like new, and might even be a couple of shades brighter. Professional teeth cleaning isn’t just for looks, but for preventative and restorative care that will help your teeth last a lifetime. In-office dental cleanings are done by professional hygienists with dental tools specifically made for removing plaque from your teeth. Plaque greatly accelerates the decaying process and causes inflammation of the gums, leading to infections, periodontal disease, and later on health problems.
Regular Dental Visits
Maintaining a healthy habit of visiting your dentist here in El Paso, every 6 months ensures that you’re keeping your oral health in check. Our friendly, professional staff of specialists will guide you through receiving an exam, x-rays, cleanings, and any other dental treatments you may need. We are here to help you through every aspect of the process of gaining oral health with state-of-the-art dental equipment and the latest in dental technology.
There are two types of teeth cleanings we perform here at Dyer Dental Care. Regular teeth cleaning and Deep cleaning which entails Scaling and Root Planing.
Scaling & Root Planing – Deep Cleaning
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums that can spread to adjacent teeth. Because it can spread to the bloodstream, periodontitis can have a cascading effect throughout the body. Heart disease, diabetes, and stroke are some of the most common health conditions associated with untreated periodontal disease.
During this process, the tooth is cleaned down far beneath the gumline, down to the roots. A local anesthetic may be used to minimize any pain or discomfort you may feel. An ultrasonic tool is used to scrape the deposits off of your teeth.

What to Expect During a Dental Exam & Teeth Cleaning
Brushing and flossing your teeth daily is an important part of your oral hygiene routine. However, regular dental exams and teeth cleaning are vital to maintaining good oral health. While some may procrastinate on regular checkups, it’s important to remember that avoiding dental cleanings and exams could affect your oral and overall health. Let’s discover more about what happens during a dental exam and professional in-house teeth cleaning.
Teeth and Gum Examination
Before the teeth cleaning, our hygienist will check the patient’s mouth with a small mirror and scan for signs of oral health problems. Inflamed gums, plaque buildup, and dark spots are all things they will focus on during the teeth cleaning. If more issues are found such as gum disease and tooth decay, our hygienist will inform the dentist who will then give a more thorough examination with X-rays.
X-rays
X-rays will not typically be needed on every dental visit. Our hygienist and doctor will discuss with you whether or not you will need X-rays depending on your oral health. The radiation exposure from dental X-rays is very low. At Dyer Dental Care, we use digital X-rays which have even less radiation than normal X-ray machines. Remember to express any concerns or questions to our dentist and dental staff. Our staff can answer any questions you have about X-rays.
Scaling & Root Planing
Our hygienist will then remove all the plaque and tartar above and below the gum line using a small hooked tool called a scaler. This tool will help them clean down to the bottom of your gum pocket. Our dentist will then begin root planing, which is smoothing out your teeth roots to help your gums reattach to your teeth.
Polishing and Flossing
Next, our hygienist will polish the teeth and remove any stains using a handheld electric tool with a rubber prophy cup attached and a gritty toothpaste called prophylaxis paste. Patients can expect to feel a slow grinding motion on the teeth during this step in the process. The hygienist then flosses the patient’s teeth to remove any remaining plaque and paste.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatments offer significant benefits to protect teeth from tooth decay. Patients can choose what flavor of fluoride gel they like. This gel is then placed inside a mouthpiece that the patient must wear for approximately a minute.
