If you have suffered from a knocked-out tooth due to trauma or decay, it’s important to realize that time is of the essence. You should try to get to our dental office within 30 minutes. If possible, try to insert the tooth back into the socket and bite down softly so that it does not fall out. If you are not able to do this or the tooth is broken, you should put the tooth in a glass of milk and bring it to our office immediately.

Have a dental emergency? The first thing to do is stay calm. Second, carefully assess the situation to know if you really are having a dental emergency. Mistaking common teeth problems for dental emergencies can be a common occurrence.

Dental emergencies are typically when teeth become, broken, cracked, or loosened from trauma or decay. Often other parts of the mouth may also be affected such as your gums, cheeks, tongue, or lips. Other dental work such as dental implants, crowns, or bridges may also be affected. Dental emergencies will need immediate treatment and often can not be scheduled like other dental visits because of time constraints.

Minimize the Pain

If you are experiencing a great amount of pain, you need to minimize the pain as soon as possible. Typically Tylenol should be taken as directed on the bottle. If you are bleeding at all make sure to avoid aspirin or ibuprofen because these are blood thinners. You can also apply an ice pack to the affected area to reduce pain and swelling. 

Injured and decayed teeth and gums are prone to creating infections or abscesses so make sure to call our office as soon as possible. If you feel your injury is life-threatening call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room immediately.

Knocked-Out, Chipped, or Broken Tooth

A knocked-out tooth needs immediate attention, if possible, have it checked within a half-hour of being removed. There’s still a chance you can save it!

If you can, place the tooth back in the socket, place a cloth or napkin in your mouth, and gently bite down to hold the tooth in its place before you get to the dentist. If the tooth has become dirty, you can also place it in a glass of milk to try to save it.
