Men’s Dental Health

Studies have shown that men’s dental health declines faster than that of their female counterparts. With higher rates of gum disease, tooth loss, and infections, men seem to need all the help they can get when it comes to their dental health. The good news is that most of these conditions are preventable with the proper care and preventative measures.

The following is a list of issues that men have with dental health and how to prevent them:

Regular Dental Visits
According to the Academy of General Dentistry,  men go to the dentist less often than women. Often men will put off going to the dentist until they have a dental emergency. The sad fact is that if you follow though with regular dental check ups, the price you pay in money and health is far less than if you wait till you have an issue. Just think of it as getting regular oil changes for your car, because you know if you don’t your car won’t last long!

Brushing & Flossing Daily
Research done by the American Dental Association found that men brush less frequently than women. They are also less likely to brush after every meal. Failure to brush and floss daily will eventually lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and worsening overall health due to infection and inflammation caused by bacteria in plaque. The dentist tells you to brush and floss daily at the end of every dental appointment for a reason.

Healthy Diet
Most people don’t realize that what your eating can have a major affect on your teeth and gums. Proper education is crucial in understanding what foods and drinks are detrimental or beneficial to your oral health. Foods that are high in calcium, antioxidants, nutrients and minerals are a good place to start. Foods like cheese, sugar-free yogurt, leafy greens, almonds, fish, red meat, raisins, berries, and tea, are all high in nutrients, proteins, and mineral that have a beneficial affect on your mouth’s biome and pH balance. Foods that are high in sugars and acids such as deserts, sugary drinks, and processed foods are the ones you want to avoid.

Missing Teeth
Men also loose more teeth faster in life than women. In addition to lack of brushing, flossing, and dental visits, men are more likely to have a tooth fall out due to trauma. Proper prevention, such as using a mouth guard when playing sports, is the key to keeping your teeth for longer amounts of time. Missing teeth can often cause the deterioration and recession of the jaw bone. Missing teeth also lead to poorer health from the lack of being able to chew healthy foods such as leafy greens and meats. Dyer Dental Care offers a full range of Cosmetic Dentistry such as Dental Implants, and Dentures.
